Advent Reflections and Recipes

“Mary in Her Waiting”

Pause and Reflect

  • Take a few minutes to pause. Take a deep breath. Inhale and exhale slowly. Inviting God’s presence into your time. He is with you. Name the emotions you are bringing to Him. He meets you right where you are.

  • Reflect on the past few days. What did you notice in you and around you?

  • Where did you sense God’s presence?

Pray and Listen

  • Lord, I open myself to you today. I want to see you and hear you. Speak through your Word. I know your plans and ways are higher. Lead me on your path and give me all I need to follow your invitations. Courage and Faith. I love you, Jesus.

  • Read Luke 1:26-29. Step into the story. Grab your journal. Imagine what it would have been like to be there. What emotions come up for you? Is there a word or phrase that sticks out to you? Underline, Highlight and offer it to God in prayer and listen.

Birth of Jesus Foretold Luke 1:26-29 ESV

“26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed

27 to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary.

28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!”

29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be.”

  • Is there something God would like for you to receive today?

Follow His Invitation

  • Can you relate to Mary? "She was greatly troubled and tried to discern."

  • Do you trust the Lord is with you in all things?

  • Where have you noticed God inviting you to join Him?

  • What do does God want to tell you in the waiting?

  • Do you feel an invitation to follow God’s gentle whispers and take some steps toward His love?

Family Advent Devotional

Make a simple advent wreath. Materials needed are a wreath, 3 purple candles, 1 pink or red and 1 white candle. Light the 1st purple candle together. This is the HOPE candle.

Pause and Reflect

  • Ask each person how they are coming to Advent time? (This might take a few times of practicing if this is new.)

Pray and Listen

  • Lord, we want to thank you for how you love us all the time. We want to love you back. Help us to come to you as we are and know you meet us here. Speak to us today. We love you, Jesus.

Read Isaiah 40:31 together~

“but those who hope in the Lord

will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles;

they will run and not grow weary,

they will walk and not be faint.”

Follow His Invitation

  • Let each person share what they notice in these verses? What word or phrase stands out to them?

  • What does it mean to HOPE for something? Why is it hard to wait?

  • What does God promise when we hope in Him? What are His invitations today?
